By now, most people will have heard about the suicide bomber (at the moment only one) who blew up part of Brussels (Zavetem) airport. Shortly afterwards, Dutch and Belgium television reported there had possibly been attacks at Brussels Central (metro and train) station and two other metro stations.
Brussel is in total lockdown. Public transport has come to a halt and there are no trains to Antwerp Central Station. Police ask people to remain indoors. Brussels airport is evacuated and traffic to and from other regional airports is either turned away or checked and controlled by police and army, according to the Belgian paper “De Standaard”.
At the moment, there is no news of attacks at other metro stations but Maelbeek. There were reports of an attack at Schumann, which is right next to the European Parliament buildings in Brussels. At Maelbeek, at least one witness told reporters he saw dead (burnt) people and at least twenty wounded.
The Brussels firebrigade just confirmed there 11 people died at Zaventem and 10 at Maelbeek. The number of casualties will of course increase.
