Needs to be protected

America, world super power; America, one of the most important power-brokers in the world; America, leader in many fields and setting examples in many others …needs to be protected. According to Trump and his base.

Controlling legal and illegal immigration is one of the ways to protect America, according to Trump, his White House, his admin, some GOP folks.

According to university professors and think-tanks, Trump is concentrating on whatever his base wants. His popularity continuous to sink. Moreover, as they also point out: with so many non-wins, recalls, rejections, back-fires and worse, potus 45 has not much left but to pander to his base. Apart from improving his golf and raking in more money.

Jardin de Luxembourg, Paris: Statue of Liberty model.

The clamp-down on illegal immigrants, the Mexican wall, the travel-ban, the reshuffle of legal immigration rules may cause an outcry throughout America: Trump’s base will be  satisfied. To them, the poem on the Statue of Liberty is irrelevant.

Not for them “… her beacon-hand glows world-wide welcome … Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me … “

One problem: their country is under siege from legal and illegal migrants? The country needs to be protected from the world? How does this square with the perception their country is a world super-power, earth’s sheriff, leader in many fields, setting examples for others to follow?

How to square this? If America is a super-power, then why does it need to be protected? Why specifically from so-called unskilled people who apparently are deemed to be unable to master ordinary American English, nor being able to support themselves?

Didn’t one Trump harp about the stock markets doing well? Doesn’t he claim he’s responsible for the US economy doing well – if not booming? Isn’t he going to create all those trillions of jobs?

Of course, ever since Trump was sworn in, the image of America took a hit, got seriously damaged, shows plenty dents. In various corners and countries of the world, Trump managed and continues to manage to turn America into a laughing-stock, a joke.

Worse: many believe Trump and his government may well be Putin’s puppets. Even Congress decided it needed to curb the president’s power to lift sanctions. Many suspect Trump may do as told, whenever Putin snaps his fingers.

What Trump thinks – after obviously not wanting to sign the bill and his admin even claiming it got lost in the post?

Still, the bill remains seriously flawed – particularly because it encroaches on the executive branch’s authority to negotiate. Congress could not even negotiate a healthcare bill after seven years of talking. By limiting the Executive’s flexibility, this bill makes it harder for the United States to strike good deals for the American people, and will drive China, Russia, and North Korea much closer together. The Framers of our Constitution put foreign affairs in the hands of the President. This bill will prove the wisdom of that choice.

I built a truly great company worth many billions of dollars. That is a big part of the reason I was elected. As President, I can make far better deals with foreign countries than Congress. …

Making far better deals than Congress?

The deal-maker of the day and negotiator par excellence today? None other than James Comey. The Guardian reports former FBI director James Comey, “casualty of a clash” with Trump over the Russia probe, signed a book-deal of two million US$ .
